The Auckland University School of Architecture and Planning approached Alt Group to create their commemorative 100th anniversary book.
The Auckland University School of Architecture and Planning is New Zealand's first school of architecture. Known for its strong drawing tradition, The Auckland School, until the 1980’s, was the only architecture school the country, making it the most historically significant institutions of architecture.
The Auckland School: 100 years of architecture and planning is a book surveying the history of the school published in celebration of the centenary of the school in 2017. The book is designed architecturally. The text pages of the book are divided into 2 coloured paper stocks, blue as a reference to architectural blueprint paper and yellow as a reference to butter paper used by architects to trace over drawings. As a nod to the drawing history of the school the middle section of the book is a visual archive of drawings from throughout the history of the school. Photos, art directed with blue and yellow paper rolls give a sense of drawings being rolled out onto a table, placing the reader as though they are literally peeling through the university archives. The book launched at the Auckland Architecture Festival 2017 and was a finalist in the Best Awards.
I worked with designer Luke Scott under the guidance of creative director Dean Poole to art direct, design, photograph, and curate the publication.
